I Swear to God

In celebration of my blogname, I'm copying here GK Chesterton's oath administered to members of the British Detection Club. Chesterton was a British writer and a devout Catholic. So devout was he that he created Father Brown, the parish priest who doubles as a detective. Awwww.

"Do you promise that your detectives shall well and truly detect the crimes presented to them using those wits which it may please you to bestow upon them and not placing reliance on nor making use of Divine Revelation, Feminine Intuition, Mumbo Jumbo, Jiggery-Pokery, Coincidence, or Act of God?"

Amen!

We also have a local Father Brown. If you've read that truly horrid novel Smaller and Smaller Circles, you'll meet an Atenean Jesuit doubling as a detective. Eh?

Pinky has a copy of Smaller and Smaller Circles. It was required reading in a class, I think. EEEKKK! K, have you heard of Borges's detective Erik Lonnrot? :D

I'm at the office right now. Virgin at the stake.
